First, an important distinction. A life-threatening emergency — loss of consciousness, chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, major bleeding — means calling the public emergency services immediately: SAMU 141 or Civil Protection 150. SOS Nursing is a private home-nursing service that complements these public services; it never replaces them.

Many urgent needs, however, are nursing procedures that do not require a hospital emergency room but cannot wait until tomorrow: restarting an IV drip, redoing a dressing, managing a blocked catheter, giving a prescribed injection, an IV drip for dehydration after food poisoning or heat exhaustion, or checking worrying vital signs.
