What to expect
Equipment preparation
The nurse checks the prescription, prepares the infusion (antibiotic, nutrition, hydration), verifies expiry dates and sets up sterile supplies.
IV line insertion
Insertion or check of the peripheral cannula or implanted port. The nurse confirms good venous return and rules out signs of phlebitis.
Administration and monitoring
Flow rate set per prescription, clinical monitoring throughout the infusion: allergic reactions, extravasation, vital signs.
Line removal and traceability
At the end of the infusion the line is flushed and removed. The drug batch number, flow rate and any events are recorded in the care file.

Home intravenous therapy is a technical nursing procedure requiring strict asepsis and constant clinical monitoring. The nurse checks the patient's identity, prescription concordance, route of administration and prescribed flow rate (5 Rights protocol). Peripheral cannula insertion follows a strict aseptic protocol: hand hygiene, 4-step skin antisepsis (cleansing, rinsing, antiseptic application, drying), secure fixation and date-of-insertion labelling. Implanted ports are accessed with dedicated Huber needles. During the infusion, the nurse monitors for complications: allergic reaction (urticaria, dyspnoea, hypotension), extravasation (pain, swelling at the injection site), phlebitis (painful venous cord) and catheter-related sepsis (fever, rigors). Any adverse event is reported immediately to the prescribing doctor.
