The Médina is the historic heart of Marrakech, a maze of tight derbs around Jemaa el-Fna, the Koutoubia and the souks. Guest riads, family homes, artisans' workshops and small grocers' shops blend together in a tangle of lanes where time seems to stand still. You will find tourists staying in guesthouses, Marrakech families settled here for generations, and many older people who have never left their derb.

The narrow lanes are off-limits to cars: you get around on foot, by motorbike or by bicycle, and you have to know the passages, the landmarks and the doorways so as not to lose time.
