Bab Doukkala marks the north-west gate of the Médina, at the hinge between the old town and Guéliz. The district is organised around its great historic mosque, its lively market and the bus station that makes it a very busy thoroughfare. More working-class and more authentic than the tourist centre, it is home to year-round families, shopkeepers and many older people, in a fabric of riads, derbs and small apartment blocks.

Its position as a hinge is an asset: Bab Doukkala touches both the Médina and the new town, so the clinics, laboratories and pharmacies of Guéliz are a few minutes away, while the old town's facilities remain close.
